Ten Topics to Avoid in your College Application Essay
I used that title as clickbait. Actually, you can write about anything you want--yep, even sports and summer camp--as long as you are using the story as a vehicle to say something about you. It’s not the topic that matters, it’s what you do with it.
When I finish reading your essay, I want to believe you, so please avoid hyperbole! “The perseverance I gained by failing at blah blah blah means that nothing fazes me anymore; I am ready for college” or “I learned courage by giving a speech in front of that big crowd and ever since I have become totally brave and never afraid.” Really? That’s the moment it all changed for you? I don’t believe you. Let’s avoid cliché because the truth is far more interesting.
When we say the application is holistic, we mean that the essay, the activities, the supplements, the additional information, the teacher recommendations should all be building a unified story. After reading your application, the admissions officer should say, “Hey, I like this kid. I know this kid. I want them on my campus.”
