Deferred? Here’s What To Do Next!
Getting deferred is disappointing, but chin up. A deferral means the college sees potential and that you’re still in the running! It’s essential that you see a deferral not as an invitation to wait, but as a second chance. Your job is to show them why they should choose you.
Why Do Colleges Defer Applicants?
They’re undecided and need more evidence about your candidacy.
They’re waiting to see the full applicant pool before making decisions.
They’re overwhelmed by the number of applications they received.
It’s just part of their process; some colleges defer nearly everyone!
What’s Next?
Every college is unique, so strategizing with your coach is the first step. Depending on your individual situation, your coach might suggest:
Taking another standardized test.
Visiting the college and/or talking to students.
Adding updates to your resume.
Getting your grades up.
Getting another recommendation IF they know you well. Ideally from principal, but ONLY if it’s not boilerplate!
Unless the college specifically tells you in the portal not to send additional information (these include CMU, NYU, Stanford, USC, UNC, UVA…), your coach will definitely encourage you to write a LOCI! If the school does not want additional materials, your only option is to get your grades up.
What is a LOCI?
A LOCI, or Letter of Continuing Interest, lets the college know you’re still interested, provides the updates outlined above, and demonstrates your enthusiasm for the school.
A strong LOCI is all about the details! We’ll include
Academic updates to highlight strong first-semester grades or explain any dips.
Details about research/writing projects to demonstrate your intellectual curiosity.
Improved test scores to strengthen your application.
New activities or achievements that make the admissions officers feel they must have you on campus.
Insights from visits or conversations to demonstrate interest and show why this college is the perfect fit for you.
A promise to attend if this is true!
A request to connect with an admissions representative to further express your interest.
You’ve Got This!
Deferrals are an opportunity you don’t want to miss. With the right strategy, you can remind the admissions team exactly why they need you on campus. Stay positive and proactive!
